Charles barracked, Candy caned
May 19 2010
RIBA President Ruth Reed has accused the Prince of Wales of abusing his position of influence to bring about “inappropriate pressure” on Qatari Diar to ditch a modernist Rogers design for a redevelopment of Chelsea Barracks, London.Reed felt that the Prince’s intervention subverted the democratic planning process.
It is alleged that the Quatari emir “went mental” after a roasting from Charles and instructed the state backed firm to “withdraw as soon as possible” from Christian Candy’s uber expensive residential scheme.
Diar has since gone back to the drawing board, instructing Dixon Jones, Squire & Partners and Kim Wilkie Associates to draw up an alternative scheme more attuned to the Prince’s sensibilities.
