Egyptian Halls video highlights risks
May 14 2010
Union Street Properties and Union Street Investments have launched a 4min video charting 30 years of dereliction at Alexander Thomson's Egyptian Halls. It forms part of an initiative by the developers to obtain crucial public sector backing for the £20m+ project and crucially explains how only the full funding package of £5m will secure the structures future by demonstarting how the innovative construction techniques render usual facade retention both unviable and nigh impossible to achieve
It is feared the A listed warehouse would need to be demolished to avoid progressive collapse and associated structural issues for neighbouring properties.

No, demolition is NOT the answer, but nor is scare tactics.

I'd ask that you watch the video/movie. And we'll also upload shortly the technical explanation written by the The Morrison Partnership who've been the scheme architects for the past 13 years.
We've been involved for 12 years and do not want at all to have to seriously consider demolition. However the structural issues are beginning to impact significantly for both floor and facade. There comes a tipping point when it won't be able to retrieved from.
Please believe there are no scare tactics here. In fact we've been raising this as an accelerating issue for the past 7-8 years.
So to repeat no scare tactics just a very stark and unpalatable choice from two options only, during what will become a financial tsunami.
And can I also ask why no answers have been forthcoming since 1981, when this problem started?

Watch the video, look at the web site, ask about how the Scottish Governent can streamline statutory powers to make them quicker and more effective- the first LBRN was served in 1987- some 23 years ago?? And some 11 years before we became involved. Ask if joined up and collective Government is a myth or a political soundbite?
Look also at the relevant Urban Realm article from Dec 09, it has the time line, with one error, it should start in 1981 not 1985.
Finally don't shoot then messenger either!!!
Have a relaxing weekend!
