Grand plans for Glasgow's Central Station hotel
Hotel operator Principal Hayley have published fresh details of their  £20m transformation of Glasgow’s Central Station Hotel, now dubbed “Grand Central.”

The historic railway terminus is being restored by Crerar Architects who are in process of stripping out partition walls and suspended ceilings to reveal past glories whilst injecting a touch of contemporary style with sensitive interventions.

Intended to become a leading conference, banqueting and short break the four star venue will accommodate a Glasgow branch of the Tempus bar and restaurant chain together with a champagne bar overlooking the station concourse and a full refurbishment of all 180 bedrooms.

A “soft” opening is planned for July in advance of a full unveiling set to take place in September 2010

Asbestos contaminated basement areas meanwhile are simply to be cleaned up and sealed whilst attic spaces will remain similarly off limits.

I'd long thought it was such a shame such a grand and beautiful building had been dragged into a sort of shabby vulgarity. It looks that this new team appreciate and respect the considerable and unusual quality of the original, so all the best to them.

Looks like they've watched a little bit too much Hotel Babylon.
