New lease of life for Dewsbury Crematorium
April 20 2010
Planning approval has been granted to Aedas for a £2.6m crematorium in Dewsbury, replacing an existing 1960’s facility.Commissioned by Kirklees Metropolitan Council the building occupies a steeply sloping site which offers a panoramic aspect across the Lower Spen Valley.
Natural contours in the landscape inform the sculptural design which arcs above an orthogonal sandstone and granite plinth.
The roof tapers to a seven metre cantilever above the reception space and remembrance chapel, it then sweeps above to allow uninterrupted views of the surrounding valley from within.
Tiered gardens within the centre provide a contemplative environment for quiet remembrance.
Due to start on site in August 2010, the project will complete in July 2011.
