Shed KM in New Islington win
December 17 2004
Shed KM Architects and Taylor Woodrow have been named as winners of the latest developer competition for New Islington Millennium Community, East Manchester. The Liverpool practice beat the likes of de Rijke Marsh Morgan and Mecanoo Architects for the opportunity to design a residential scheme for a 6,750 sq m plot within the 29-acre site. The judges included Urban Splash’s development director Nick Johnson and Tom Russell, Chief Executive of New East Manchester Ltd. Shed KM’s proposals were selected for their innovative design and approach to sustainable development, affordable housing provision and delivery. Johnson said, “The response to the competition was fantastic. Taylor Woodrow and Shed KM’s proposal for a timber frame ‘green’ building is a radical re-working of timber frame technology. It’s slick, it’s modern, it’s a contrast to FAT’s excellent scheme which is now on site and it’s exactly what we were looking for to broaden the architectural mix in this challenging regeneration project.”
