Steven Purcell steps down as Glasgow City Council leader
March 2 2010
Steven Purcell, leader of Glasgow City Council, has stepped down from the post citing health concerns. The Labour councillor had led the authority for nearly five years but admitted to suffering from stress and exhaustion.
Jim Coleman will serve as acting leader and has stated that as far as the council is concerned it is business as usual.
Proceedings to elect a permanent leader will begin later in the year, probably after the general election.
Purcell is said to have been under pressure in recent days over a series of resignations at SPT and was suffering exhaustion from Commonwealth Games preparations.
This came to a head at the weekend when the council head was urged to visit a doctor at the behest of friends and family.
Purcell hopes to remain as a councillor and re-enter frontline politics in the coming weeks and months.
