Edinburgh reinvents the wheel
March 2 2010
Edinburgh councillors have set plans for a giant ferris wheel at Leith in motion after drawing up a formal agreement with developers, Great City Attractions (GCA).This is believed to give Edinburgh first dibs on the structure if it comes to Scotland with officials keen for “Scotland’s National Wheel” to be located on a site between Ocean Terminal and the Royal Yacht Britannia.
Councillors are seeking government approval to borrow £84m to fund a cruise liner terminal, waterfront walkway, shops and restaurants in the wider Leith Docks area. The wheel itself would be designed and funded by GCA.
Subject to planning consent and agreement with Forth Ports the giant wheel could be turning by 2013.
