M74 viaduct motors along

Work begins in earnest today on the most dramatic section of Glasgow’s M74 link. The 750m long Port Eglinton Viaduct will stretch over roads, warehouses and the West Coast Mainline as it snakes its way through the city’s south side.
Rather than winch the weighty structure into place engineers have opted to pull the first 135m section of carriageway at a steady 10 metres per hour onto its concrete supports in a series of delicate night operations.
It is hoped to complete the £445m road by 2011.
