Manchester’s Urbis closes its doors
January 29 2010
Manchester’s Urbis building is to close next month be transformed into a football museum.Currently the National Football Museum resides in Preston but it will be relocated to the famous green glass landmark by the Summer of 2011.
Some £8m will be spent reconfiguring the interior including a remodelling of the shop, café and education spaces in anticipation of a projected increase in visitor numbers.
Designed by Ian Simpson in 2002 the centre has stood as a museum of city life and staged architectural events such as Architecture Week, exhibitions and talks from leading architects.
Simpson branded the scheme a “good idea” and pledged to bid for the work if subject to an architectural competition.
It is the second major British exhibition centre to close following Glasgow’s Lighthouse last year.

While we may have done (very) occasional events connected to architecture, Urbis has never been and is not an 'architecture centre'

Urbis - I've amended the reference to 'exhibition' centre.
