George Square eyes GSA conference
January 22 2010
Glasgow School of Art is inviting a range of leading design experts to Glasgow’s George Square to discuss the importance of the urban public spaces to the health of a city. The conference will draw speakers from the fields of urban design, town planning and architecture amongst them Ken Livingstone, Paul Stallan, David Page and Neil Gillespie.
Using George Square as their template the team will embrace international design initiatives to address the variety of roles that civic spaces perform in cities today.
Glasgow’s premier civic space has been heavily criticised for its use of low quality red asphalt, ill suited events, on street parking, congestion, lack of green space and an abortive Council run café competition.
The conference, which runs from April 22-24, is designed to appeal to “anyone interested in the challenge of re-imagining and re-designingdynamic urban spaces for civic engagement, and for all those who wish to place ‘the square' back at the heart of civic thinking."

I am in total agreement with the frustration people have about George Square. I have worked in the Council department looking after the Square and I'm afraid until the management/staff turn into people who actually care about urban design, town planning and architecture nothing will change.
