Plans for Keppie's new midwife-led facility at Simpson’s Centre for Reproductive Health at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh have been released by NHS Lothian.Sporting curved walls, spacious delivery rooms – each with their birthing pool and en suite bathroom the centre is likely to prove a hit with expectant mothers and midwifes alike.
NHS Lothian commissioned the unit after a recent baby boom hit the region, births have jumped 11% over the three year period from 2004 to 9,456, sparking the move to increase patient choice.
The birthing centre will allow around 1,500 women a year to give birth in a “homely” environment that affords increased privacy and dignity with medical expertise close at hand.
