First Glasgow push for dedicated city centre bus lanes
January 18 2010
First Glasgow is touting a system of dedicated city centre bus lanes in a bid to tackle congestion.Under the plans these routes would be available for the exclusive use of buses for either 24 hours a day, or 12 to allow continued delivery access by night.
It would be built up from the existing “Streamline” network, a series of priority bus routes running along key corridors of the Glasgow area.
Such a system would make scheduling easier on the network and provide quicker and more reliable service for passengers.
Road users are unlikely to find favour with this or other aspects of the proposals, which include a permit system on all city centre slip roads to bar excess traffic and a reduction in on street parking.
Much of the blame for city centre grid lock is placed on motorway traffic diverting through the city centre when there is a problem on the motorway.
First are keen that the vested interests of motoring groups be relegated below public transport however as a means to stimulate increased ridership and decreased congestion.
Such a system could tie in with the proposed Clyde Fastlink, an initiative aimed at democratising access to riverfront land via a dedicated bus route..
