Homeowners down under get one up over the British
January 14 2010
The shrinking nature of new build British housing will be apparent to any purchaser wishing to relocate their antique furniture but comparison with our Australian cousins shows just how claustrophobic our world is becoming.Until recently land rich Americans were the world’s top sprawlers but now a new challenger has emerged from the southern hemisphere which now boasts the world's largest homes.
Over the past decade the average Australian home has grown by 10% to 214sq/m, dwarfing their pokey British compatriot’s paltry 76sq/m.
Fueling the growth is an increase in size of the average Australian household which has expanded to 2.56 as children live at home longer and more people opt to house share.
Such trends serve to limit the volume of new housing which needs to be built but pressures developers to provide more space.
UK homes are the smallest in Europe with even land scarce Netherlands managing 115.5sq/m.
