Liberal Democrats make empty homes pledge
January 14 2010
Plans have been unveiled by the Liberal Democrats to bring a quarter of a million empty homes back into use.Under the plans grants would be made available to owners willing to convert their properties into social accommodation whilst loans would be available to owners to convert for private use.
Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg is keen to promote the parties credentials as a force to reduce housing waiting lists, create jobs and provide more family homes.
Clegg said: "The cost of bringing these homes back into use is just a fraction of the cost of building new ones, yet the government is sitting idly by while they fall into disrepair.”
There are currently an estimated 870,000 empty properties in the UK, together with enough vacant commercial property to create a further 420,000.
