Freezing weather takes its toll on roads
January 14 2010
Thawing ice is exacerbating a growing pothole problem on the nation’s roads as the current cold snap takes its toll on the nations roads.Freezing conditions have taken their toll turning many routes into crater strewn minefields
Potholes are exacerbated in winter when water seeps through cracks in the tarmac generated by normal wear and tear. When this water freezes however it expands, rupturing the road surface around it.
Emergency maintenance programs are now being called for in a bid to reduce accidents and damage to vehicles.
According to the AA a two week cold snap in February last year saw the number of British potholes increase from 900,000 to 1.5m.
