Ian Parsons eyes Cuban heritage crisis
January 11 2010
Ian Parsons, a small Edinburgh based conservation and historic buildings architect, is casting his eye to sunnier climes with ambition to rescue Cuba’s crumbling architectural legacy. The communist redoubt has figured prominently in world politics but its economy has proved less eye catching, leaving a trail of dilapidated buildings and crumbling infrastructure in its wake.
Struck by the colourful and eclectic building style in the Caribbean state Parsons was so fired up by the architectural decay that he agreed to give a lecture at the British Embassy there.
Now Parsons is on a mission to apply expertise gained from restoration of Edinburgh buildings to Castro’s domain by establishing a charity to foster improved relations between Scotland and Cuba.
Sponsorship is currently being sought for The Cuba Conservation Trust which would seek to enable Cubans to tap international expertise and tackle regeneration directly to conserve their local environments.
