Austin-Smith:Lord’s Liverpool library on the cusp of approval
Liverpool Central Library is on track for a £50m makeover as the Victorian institution spruces itself up for a new century.

Austin-Smith:Lord ambitious remodelling is expected to be approved by councillors tomorrow, with planning officers expressing satisfaction that proposed works will be sympathetic to the existing historic structure.

New build elements include a new atrium and domed rooflight, together with new elevations to the rear. A new main entrance will welcome the public, aided by improved street and internal accessibility, a rooftop atrium, terrace and lightwells.

This will enhance the existing Grade II listed premises which will benefit from façade repairs and a restoration of the main reading rooms.

Under the plans some 14km of historic archives will be relocated from the Liverpool Record Office to purpose built climate controlled storage.  A start on site is projected for June 2010 presuming the application is green lighted.
