Highland power line set for approval
January 6 2010
Scottish Government ministers are set to approve a new power transmission line from Beauly, west of Inverness to Denny near Falkirk, subject to conditions.Comprising some 600 pylons rising to 200ft in height the project is needed to connect renewable energy projects in the Highlands with consumers in the central belt.
Environmentalists have been critical of the impact on the landscape of such a large scale intervention however, particularly on areas such as the Cairngorms National Park.
Campaigners will be disappointed by the decision having urged Ministers to insist on the cable being laid underground.
Backed by Scottish and Southern Energy the £400m project will replace an existing lower voltage line.
