SNP curtail right to buy

SNP curtail right to buy
Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s Deputy First Minister, has declared an end to right to buy for all new council and social housing tenants.

Seeking to address a shortage of social housing Sturgeon told the SNP’s party conference that the scheme, introduced by Margaret Thatcher in 1980’s Housing Act, was leading to a shortage of affordable housing.

Increased numbers of homes for social rent are now being built after 2010 budget spending was brought forward and the government are keen to avoid these falling into private hands.

Whilst reiterating SNP support for home ownership the Minister stressed a need to maintain a stock of homes for those who could not afford to buy.
