GCAs Glenboig community centre goes to planning
October 15 2009
GCA Architecture have submitted plans for a new ‘Life Centre’ in Glenboig on behalf of a local community group, Glenboig Neighbourhood House.Having outgrown its existing premises the group is seeking to create a new community centre to provide expanded support, education and organisational services for the area.
A patch of rough brush and grass outside the main area of a popular village park has been earmarked for the project, formerly the site of Starworks Brickworks.
Oriented to maximise views from public spaces across an adjacent loch, GCA have designed a series of open terraces to connect inner spaces with the surrounding parkland.
In shape and form the centre has been influenced by the former industrial buildings on site, the centrepiece of which is a sculptural tower derived from the kiln chimneys which once dominated the local skyline. Copper and timber have been selected for cladding due to the materials naturally ageing properties.
The plans have been informed by a series of public consultations to gauge public desires and opinion.
