Ravenscraig sport facility takes shape
September 2 2009
The skeletal steel form of Ravenscraig’s £31m sports facility is beginning toemerge on the former Lanarkshire steelworks as Buro Happold erect supporting steel trusses for the expansive structure, soon to accommodate an indoor football pitch, sports hall and gymnasium. Each truss requires a span of 72m and is bolted together on site, they vary in profile from flat to arched to accommodate internal headroom requirements.
Particular challenges were presented to Happold’s engineers by extensive tunnels, basements, foundations and pipework, all of which had to be excavated to allow formation of foundations.
Designed by Populous the Centre has been backed by North Lanarkshire Council, Ravenscraig Ltd and the Scottish Government who are each keen for the facility to become a key training ground for both the London Olympics in 2012 and Glasgow’s 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Buro Happold Principal Rod Manson said: “Who knows which future Scottish sporting champions will be produced by Ravenscraig – success stories that we, Buro Happold, will have played our part in.”
