Fine 2009 designs shine
May 30 2009
Talk of the credit crunch was suspended recently when the profession gathered to celebrate the best of architecture at the Scottish Design Awards.
From the record breaking slew of entries, the unprecedented calibre of submissions, to shining a light on the best in illuminations with our new lighting category, the Scottish Design Awards proved to be a show of firsts.
Notable amongst the winners were Reiach and Hall who picked up the Grand Prix Award for their Cancer Research Facility at the Beatson.
Edinburgh University’s Informatics Forum building in Potterrow has been collecting plaudits like a rampant Pokemon and the SDA’s proved no different with our prestigious Chairman’s Award being added to that collection.
Dennis Sharp, the jury chairman, gave particular acknowledgement to the genuine strides made by the project in terms of sustainability.
On the residential front the big winners included the work done by Page\Park, Elder & Cannon, Richard Murphy and JM Architects in the former meat market in Glasgow’s blighted east end. The architectural quartet have effected that rarest of accomplishments, affordable homes of stellar design that works as a harmonious whole, a clear winner in the Best Affordable Housing category.
Said Awards director Gordon Young, “It is not hyperbole to say that 2009 really was a vintage year for this event. Despite economic problems Scottish practices are still producing some great work.”
