Smart start at School of Art
May 6 2009
Glasgow School of Art’s (GSA) design competition for a new teaching facility opposite the Mackintosh Building in Garnethill has attracted 152 entries from across the globe. These will now be sifted through by a jury chaired by David Mackay of MBM Arquitectes, with broadcaster and writer Muriel Gray as Deputy Chair. They will be aided by: Professor Christine Hawley; Professor Isi Metstein; Fred Shedden; Professor Seona Reid; Eleanor McAlister; and Professor David Porter to whittle this list down to a shortlist of at most seven, to be announced on May 22.
Shortlisted practices will develop their thinking prior to a final submission at the end of July prior to announcement of the winning team in September.
Phase 1, set to open in 2013, will start the complete redevelopment of the School’s estate, transforming the current incoherent and inefficient scatter of unfit for purpose buildings into an appropriate urban campus.
