Thomas and Adamson’s Glasgow based building surveying team are working in Kiev to survey an area once occupied by the Orange Revolution.

Independence Square was brought to international attention in 2005 when a group of demonstrators pitched tents and flags on the site to protest against the government of the time and election irregularities.

The political movement has left an indelible mark upon the psyche of the Ukraine as well as, it seems, the roof of the Globus Shopping Centre which sits below the square.  Thousands of pitched tents and flagpoles are thought to have punctured a tanking system, leading to water penetration at the centre.

This has led to the Glaswegian team being dispatched to carry out a full condition survey of the fabric and services and review legal and technical information.

Michael Beverley, partner in Thomas and Adamson said:  “Carrying out a survey of such an unusual building was not without its challenges and you discover and discuss (through an interpreter mainly) things that are not the norm in the UK.”

Globus is the deepest shopping centre in Kiev and was constructed below national monuments without disturbing or affecting the historical importance of the square.
