Residents see red in greenfield/brownfield clash
April 10 2009
A proposal to erect hundreds of affordable homes on greenbelt land in Newton Mearns has elicited umbrage from local residents.Cairn Housing Association and Patterton SPV Ltd wish to construct 304 houses on a strip of land next to Rouken Glen to meet pent up demand in the area for cheap housing.
Local residents however want to see alternative brownfield sites used, but the developers insist that there is an insufficient supply of such land in Newton Mearns.
It is feared that more sprawl in the area would contribute to a merging of the East Renfrewshire and Glasgow urban areas and set a precedent for further encroachment elsewhere.
