Murphy submits green Queens scheme
April 3 2009
Richard Murphy Architects have submitted a 260 bed student housing scheme at Queens University, Belfast, for planning permission.Designed in collaboration with RPP Architects the scheme takes the form of a single perimeter block enclosing three sides of a garden.
The £12.5m scheme continues the external staircase plan last seen at the practice’s Moore Street housing development in the Gallowgate, Glasgow, providing each flat with an external space looking onto the gardens below.
Designed to cater for postgraduate students, many from abroad, the layout attempts to counter a tendency for social isolation brought about by linguistic and cultural differences. To that end all kitchen and living spaces front onto the garden in attempt to push the area as a social meeting point.
