Govanhill Baths splash out
March 16 2009
South side residents are lending vociferous support to substantial £12.5m plans to re-open the Edwardian Govanhill Baths.Local campaign group, Govanhill Baths Community Trust, are behind calls for the transformation of the historic pool into a healthy living centre. It is hoped this can be achieved by splitting the hefty bill between the Trusts own fundraising and stretched Council coffers.
Offsetting this investment is the projected longer terms benefit expected to be accrued through improving health and reducing anti social behaviour.
Nord Architects are drafting up proposals which could see the swimming pool reinstated with a new build extension to the rear, offering a nursery, cinema, café and community spaces.
There is concern however of potential over provision of swimming facilities in the area with the modern Gorbals leisure centre close to hand.
