M&S hold the Fort
March 4 2009
Plans for a substantial Marks and Spencer store in Easterhouse have been put on ice.It had been proposed to expand the existing retail offer at Glasgow Fort with an additional 175,000sq/ft of space, with M&S anchoring it.
Those plans are now in disarray after the retailing leviathan put its move on hold.
The retail retreat places in question a £10m cash injection for community events in the area, a planning gain requirement placed on Hercules Unit Trust, developer of the property.
Local councillors are frustrated by the last minute withdrawal of this cash bonanza.
M&S remain committed to opening a store on the site however, to the consternation of the Buchanan Galleries and others who are concerned at the recent spate of out of town development.
