Clean energy on the way
February 23 2009
Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) are to invest £3bn developing its renewable energy portfolio and improving distribution networks. The recession busting sum will ensure the creation of hundreds of jobs as the Perth based company takes a lead role in wind power.
Heading the bill is the largest onshore windfarm in Europe for which construction is due to begin later this year. The £600m scheme is scheduled to complete in 2012.
In addition to wind power SSE will be investing in their existing portfolio of hydroelectric and gas fired power stations with further large sums being spent on the upgrade of electricity and gas networks.
Most notably this incorporates replacement of a transmission line between Beauly and Denny to boost capacity in the north. The project is distinguished by dint of being subject to the longest public inquiry since devolution, ministers are likely to give it the nod this year however.
