Shared living concept to reinvigorate a derelict Barmulloch care home
April 9 2025
A vacant care home in Barmulloch could be converted into co-living apartments geared toward students and young professionals.
Located near the planned HMP Glasgow, the shared living accommodation would cater to students as a 'stepping stone' between studying and mainstream housing.
Built in the 1990s and closed in 2022 the care home will be converted with minimal interventions to six 'flats', each containing ten ensuite bedrooms with shared kitchen access and communal lounge/diner.
In a concept statement, the applicant wrote: "The new residential development will benefit from significant communal living spaces which extend to over 1,184 sqm which is far more than the requirements of 99 sqm. External private gardens exceed 1,016 sqm in addition to the undisturbed green “U” space around the south of the site. The development will be one of the leading co-living developments in the city providing premium and spacious living areas and facilities."
On-site facilities will include a gym, cinema and bike store in the design by Macaulay Miller Architecture for W100.
