Balgray Reservoir improvements hit by a year-long delay

East Renfrewshire Council has pushed the completion date for road improvements at Balgray Reservoir back to spring 2026 after encountering more challenging ground conditions than anticipated.

The delay will have a knock-on impact on Aurs Road, which will remain closed for the duration of onsite works by the main contractor Graham, severing the link between Barrhead and Newton Mearns.

A spokesperson for East Renfrewshire Council said: "In addition to issues already encountered, including challenging ground conditions, moving unmapped utilities and the excavation of a former water works structure, an area of subsidence has necessitated some redesign work which is ongoing."

Road widening work began in January 2024, with Aurs Road initially expected to reopen by January 2025.

Upon completion, the Stantec-designed project will incorporate an active travel link and waterfront promenade shielded by a decorative barrier.

Are the numbers right on this -- £25mill for a rat run?
