Decagon den brings a human touch to the Chelsea Flower Show

Midlothian-based design and build specialist Old School Fabrications (OSF) has shared its plans for a bespoke spherical structure to serve as the emotional centrepiece of the Down’s Syndrome Scotland Garden for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
Delivered in collaboration with Burton Hall Garden Design 'The Hug' comprises a building made from homegrown larch designed to embody the emotional characteristics of people with Down's Syndrome.
Representing an embrace the snug will provide a place for quiet reflection, drawing out the inner playfulness of visitors by evoking a child's den.
Articulating the design OSF wrote: "Our design features eight generously sized seats, each positioned between the vertical spines of the structure to make the visitor feel as though they are being comfortably held, in a similar way to a wing back chair. The ergonomic design of the seating was carefully considered to offer a relaxed and gently reclined position.
"The shelter from above is based on a decagon with the ten faces of the structure all feeding into a robust central component, comprised of ten interlocking ‘Tetris blocks’. This core shape enabled us to avoid sharp and angular forms, instead bringing a softness and welcoming feel to the spherical structure.
"The top opening drew inspiration from a traditional yurt, allowing for a large circular skylight to illuminate the interior and provide views of the moving clouds and trees above."
Deriving a circular structure from wood demanded fully customised fabrication with each piece required to be cut at precise angles.
The building will be relocated to the Watch Us Grow Garden in Palacerigg Country Park following the show.
