Rainbow to light the way to backlands Gorgie homes

An unprepossessing entrance pend at Gorgie, Edinburgh, could provide access to new serviced apartments under plans filed by Kenneth Reid Architects.

SDR Property Developments with Kenneth Reid Architects propose 28 serviced apartments for the site of a garage at 93 Gorgie Road, accessible via an existing vehicle pend threaded through tenements.

Twin new build blocks will abut a railway embankment, to leave as much breathing space for existing properties as possible. Red brick has been chosen to match the rear elevations of nearby tenements with protruding bays finished in metal cladding.

In a design statement, the applicant wrote: "The massing to the perimeter not only assists with protecting the daylighting to the backs of the tenements but also gives the opportunity to form pleasant urban courtyards. Akin to the closes of the Royal Mile or more locally, the Plaza to the front of Tynecastle Main Stand and Gorgie City Farm which are set back off the main street and form unexpected places behind the traditional urban pattern."

Each 30sq/m apartment comprises a sleeping and living area as well as a shower room, catering for the traveller market due to the detrimental impact of railway noise and vibrations.
