Angus sporting estate turns to whisky in rural regeneration drive

A former sporting estate at Glen Prosen, Angus, is turning to whisky to boost the economy with a planning application for a new distillery.

Once a whisky smuggling route the site, now owned by Forestry and Land Scotland, will become home to Gin Bothy as it broadens its spirit operations to include Scotch.

Operating from a repurposed steading, which latterly served as an equipment store, the distillery will require minimal interventions to the existing fabric.

Bari Reid, director at Organic Architects, said: "It has been great to work with Gin Bothy on this unique project, bringing new life to a historic site and learning more about the fascinating history of whisky smuggling in the area. Our approach focuses on preserving the character of the original building, ensuring the distillery seamlessly blends into its mountainous surroundings."

Open to visitors by appointment only from July the distillery will enter production from August.
