Ageing Edinburgh office tower turns skyward to court tenants

An Edinburgh office tower is to capitalise on its elevated views with a rooftop entertainment suite and landscaped deck.
Building owners Cervidae have appointed Morgan Architects to introduce the changes as part of a bid to court tenants to the Exchange Tower at 19 Canning Street.
Part of a general refurbishment plan for the ageing Haymarket premises the work aims to rejuvenate the 1970s structure to better compete with new build commercial competitors.
Built atop the sixth-floor roof the entertainment suite will be accessed through the existing curtain wall where a multi-function space including a kitchen, event room and toilet will be installed.
In a design statement, the architects wrote: "Architecturally, the new extension’s canopy will be designed to match the level of the existing top of the cladding of the protruding volume on the west façade, ensuring the continuity between the existing and new designs and maintaining a consistent massing."
Faced in dark grey cassette aluminium cladding the modest extension includes the installation of aluminium louvres to hide the rooftop plant as well as the installation of a safety balustrade.
