Hundreds of homes breathe life into Glasgow's inner city
March 5 2025
The first phase of a significant new residential development in the heart of Glasgow's east end has completed, helping to repopulate inner city brownfield land.
Wheatley Homes with Hypostyle and McTaggart Construction have delivered the first 90 homes of the broader 264-home Calton Village development off the Gallowgate, comprising a mix of flats and houses for social and mid-market rent.
Powered by the largest district heating network in the city, the highly insulated homes draw energy for heating and water from a central hub.
Wheatley Group director of development and regeneration, Lindsay Lauder, said: “Bringing this site back to life is a major investment in the area, delivering high-quality, energy-efficient homes in a great location close to the city centre.
“These homes will make a huge difference to people’s lives, providing warm, safe, and modern places to live, while also supporting Scotland’s Net Zero ambitions.”
The £32m development is supported by Glasgow City Council through its affordable housing supply programme with the remaining properties due to complete later in the year.

I had a walk through there the other day and it is dismally dreich- too open and proportionally all wrong. The materials - especially that anemic, pasty brick and those bolted-on juliet balconies give it that young offenders institute feel - though admittedly not quite as much as its neighbour down the road.

A really horrible addition to an area that can ill afford it and where clients and architects need to do better. The designs around Moore Street and Graham Square, Homes for the Future too - though not without flaws - seem like a very distant memory when some of the city's best designers could try and flex their muscles. At least there was an attempt at innovation. Now we get this... and the sludge at the Meat Market.
Good to see.

Surely not ...
How much did they pay for the site?
Given the rent levels on offer -- hopefully not much.
Design vibe -- Tenements no more as the Proclaimers should sing.
Not really the Glesga look is it?
