Speakeasy to put a Broughty Ferry bank back in the black

A disused Broughty Ferry bank is to play a new role as a cocktail bar under plans drawn up by Wilson Paul Architects.

The former Royal Bank of Scotland premises at 288 Brook Street have been closed since November 2023 but will soon play a new role in supporting the nighttime economy.

The ground floor will be converted into an open speakeasy-style bar with lounge seating with echoes of its past life living on in the form of a retained bank vault serving as a VIP area.

In a supporting statement, the architects wrote: "The interior design has been developed around a contemporary speakeasy concept and draws direct influence from the previous longstanding bank use. Our approach has been designed to take as light a touch on the existing building as possible, with the aim of adaptively re-using features such as the large format existing safe, or ‘vault’ and internal window fixtures."

The Vault will entail minimal interventions to the existing fabric of the 1850's conservation area building, which includes a residential apartment on the upper floor.
