Black Isle 'clachan' distillery to restore the Ferintosh whisky name
February 17 2025
A forgotten distillery region will be returned to the whisky map with plans to resume distilling at Ferintosh on the Black Isle.
Organic Architects have filed plans with Highland Council for a new distillery, visitor centre and warehouse on Mulchaich Farm, restoring production to a region once synonymous with the drink.
Organic Architects director Bari Reid commented: “Local tradition and archaeological evidence suggests that the ruins at Mulchaich Farm are the remains of one of the original Ferintosh distilleries. Today nothing remains of this lost region which was once Scotland’s biggest whisky producer and the site is used for sheep-grazing as part of the farmland at Mulchaich. The history of the site is the very reason for this proposal coming about, and the research that was carried out for this application has proven that there was distillation on this site.”
Modelled on a traditional 'clachan' the distillery will form a cluster of low stone buildings huddled against the prevailing winds with links between structures forming courtyards and sheltered external spaces.
A lime render tower will dominate the main courtyard, encasing a special direct fired still resting on a base of natural stone.
