Renowned London street courts pedestrians with a £46m refresh

A famed London street known for its luxury retail offer has been transformed into a kilometre-long 'green boulevard' by John McAslan + Partners after the practice won an international design competition.
Sloane Street has been subject to £46m of public realm works including pavement widening, tree planting and the installation of LED lighting and street furniture between Knightsbridge and Sloane Square.
Pavements have been laid with honey-hued Yorkstone with parking and loading bays demarked by silver-grey granite and brass studs. Handmade granite planters, ornamental cast iron street lights and traffic calming measures further enhance the pedestrian experience.
John McAslan commented: “Transforming this iconic street has been an exhilarating urban design endeavour. Sloane Street’s generous width and architectural asymmetry allowed us to craft a grand boulevard with a dynamic, people-centric vision. Blending contextual sensitivity with bold creativity, we have enhanced well-being, increased dwell time, strengthened security, and eased traffic impact. Green infrastructure and a horticulturally driven design enrich biodiversity and ensure a lasting environmental legacy. The result is a dramatically elevated public realm - offering residents, visitors, and businesses an exceptional experience, now rivalling the grandeur of Avenue Montaigne in Paris and Via Condotti in Rome”.
The project is billed as the most significant investment in the street since it was laid out in the 18th century and has been funded by landowner Cadogan with Kensington & Chelsea Council.

The current incumbents of Glasgow City chambers are a huge hindrance to our city. Very sad.
