Mayfield joint campus to promote broader utility

A Mayfield school is opening up to the broader community under redevelopment plans by Midlothian Council

Mayfield Community Learning Campus will draw together two primary schools, an early years facility and services for children with additional support needs (ASN) in one integrated campus.

jmarchitects propose to replace the existing Mayfield and St Luke's Primary with a new joint campus embedded within an integrated landscape and including the provision of a public library, workspaces, meeting rooms and multi-use spaces.

The new campus will be built on playgrounds to the south of the current building, with both schools arranged along a shared east-west 'street' bookended by early years and ASN classrooms.

In an architectural statement, jmarchitects wrote: "Shared accommodation such as the multi-purpose hall, library and community spaces are located along the street and will bring animation and activation to this central space.

"The two primary schools are located at either side of a central active seating stair, located at the splay of the building, creating a framed view and visual focus on one of the retained mature trees."

Access to covered external teaching areas is provided, including covered terraces at first-floor level, which also serve to activate the facade.

Consented and due to start on site last year this second Planning Application represents a much shrunk scheme due to 'rising cost of materials'. Huge scaling back of the Community provision compared to previous (Nursery, Classrooms, ASN and landscaping also shrunk/value engineered) while retaining all the Design Statement quotable (circulation) spaces. Meanwhile half of the existing school has currently moved out due to to crumbling state of the existing building (missed opportunity for a rethink when the school no longer needs built in the existing schools playground?). Do better Midlothian Council.
