Edinburgh Fringe commissions a multifunction Old Town performance space
February 10 2025
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society has commissioned Studio LBA to transform its Old Town headquarters at 6 Infirmary Street into a multi-purpose performance and community space.
Fringe Central will serve as an all-year hub for artists and locals, updating the fabric of the historic former school (dating from 1885) to meet net zero carbon standards.
Studio LBA will restore and modernise the B-listed structure to serve as the public-facing home of the charity, improving insulation and accessibility through the addition of air source heat pumps, accessible toilets, an entrance ramp and an internal lift.
Lynsay Bell Manson, managing director at Studio LBA, commented: “Our design approach is sensitive to the cherished history of the building, so our plans focus on preserving the existing character, whilst upgrading the building’s fabric and accessibility.
“Given the net zero targets for Scotland, we'll be adopting a low-energy approach to retrofitting the existing building using sustainable materials and adding more energy-efficient solutions throughout. We’ll also maintain flexibility in our design to ensure the space can adapt to the changing needs of the charity and the Fringe for years to come.”
The project team includes Thomas & Adamson, Montagu Evans, Will Rudd Davidson and Wallace Whittle.
