Ellon civic hub unifies council services

Aberdeenshire Council has begun transferring services to a frontline civic hub, providing Ellon with a new library and family resource centre.

Formartine House on Union Street occupies the site of the former Ellon Academy, drawing council services under one roof and releasing surplus town centre sites for alternative use - such as the existing library on Station Road which has now been put up for sale.

Designed in-house by Aberdeenshire Council the energy-efficient build will include an events space and registrar's service. Landscaping by Wardell Armstrong includes a retained 300-year-old walnut tree.

Cllr Iain Taylor commented: “As well as becoming a central hub for council services in Ellon, the building presents the opportunity for the council to release a number of town centre sites that have potential for various other uses over the coming months and years.”

A public opening has been set for Monday.

Looks like a big improvement over the ex-Ellon Academy, and it's good that Aberdeenshire Council is continuing to roll out civic hubs beyond the Moxon-designed building in Fraserburgh. Good stuff.
