Hotel revamp to cater for burgeoning Hydro entertainment district
January 17 2025
A Glasgow hotel is capitalising on the popularity of the Hydro with plans for a complete makeover.
The former Campanile Hotel at 10 Tunnel Street, now closed, will be redeveloped by ICA on behalf of Radisson to include an extension with the existing building overclad to match.
Designed for the chain's mid-range Prize brand the redevelopment will provide additional accommodation and implement a landscaping strategy to tie the development into the nearby North Rotunda and Radisson Red hotel - currently set adrift amidst surface parking lots. This will reduce parking spaces from 54 to 38 to introduce meadow planting.
In a planning statement, ICA wrote: "Being cost-efficient and bold in design features are the main aspects when developing Prize by Radisson guestrooms. These have been designed to keep essentials through simple but clever design tools: colour, pattern and furnishings that add character and visual interest including signature neon lamps.
"Also, by using panels and racks we avoid chasing walls for light fittings and TV wiring. Guest comfort is at the centre of the design, that's why even with a very efficient layout, beds have generous sizes (180x200) and walk-in showers in bathrooms are provided for all rooms."
Dating from 2002 the steel frame structure will be retained behind a more contemporary skin of bronze metal panels above a brick base.

The hotel is empty after 20 years use by a discount brand with no energy and little local presence.
New owner with a new brand / concept plus a refurb and an extension engaging with its surroundings is a big step forward.
Hopefully the MOT garage is next on the list.
Someone trying to max out a site / any site is what the SECC and the city needs.
Refurb + extension vs multiple artists impressions of a new Congress Square?
Radisson seem to be making a go of it in that corner of the SECC estate.
Asks questions of the main complex -- the Hydro must be generating a lot of cash so what are they going to do with it?
Recent plans looked terrible -- hobbit sanctuary / groundscraper vibe that adds little to the area.
The to do list is very long.
Improve the railway station and the tunnel.
Make a feature out of the central spine to provide an everyday offer above and beyond individual events.
New large scale hall -- big on volume / small on cost.
Build on the tarmac western prairie.
More hotels -- hotel district with a better walking route to Finnieston.
