Shetland-based architect Richard Gibson passes away
January 15 2025
Shetland-based architect Richard Gibson, namesake of the current Née Gibson Architects, has passed away aged 89.
A Londoner by birth Gibson made the Shetland Islands his home after relocating there in 1969, swiftly establishing Richard Gibson Architects within three years of relocating to offer islanders a local architecture service independent of the mainland.
Recipient of a RIAS Lifetime Achievement award in 2010 Gibson is best known for his role in delivering projects such as Hamnavoe Primary and Symbister House, the finest Georgian property on the archipelago.
Having retired in 2016 his practice, rebranded as Née Gibson Architects in 2022, continues to thrive from its Lerwick base, applying knowledge of the harsh local climate and an understanding of the coastal environment to their work.
More recent projects include the colourful Grodians social housing development for Hjaltland Housing Association and The Ayres, a private residence neighboured by abandoned crofts. Other works include the Eric Gray @ Seafield Centre, a daycare facility operated by Shetland Islands Council.
A funeral will take place at 11:00 in Mareel tomorrow, Thursday the 16th of January and will be streamed live on YouTube.
