Urban Realm kicks off 2025 at scale

Urban Realm begins 2025 at scale with the reveal of UR100, a century of the top practices to watch. More than just a list of the biggest and best our dynamic representation of the architecture profession shows who has made the greatest strides and the new entrants to watch for.

Away from the limelight, we make time to cover the less glamorous side of urbanity from the introduction of a new citizen science tool to map poverty and visit a disused torpedo testing range in Arrochar, where some tourism-related projects have been testing the waters.

This limbers us up for our in-depth look at accessibility, an exploration of how provisions can and should extend beyond a bolt-on ramp. A varied series of building reviews run with these concepts, from Edinburgh’s data-driven Usher Institute to the community-led Strathblane Library and East Calder Primary, which is triangulating a fresh approach to economics, education and energy.

Much like 2025, we are just getting started so keep your eyes peeled to the page and screen at Urban Realm

I like the idea of the UR 100 highlighting more than just Scotland's biggest firms; any chance of an UR 30 under 30 or 20 under 20 (employees) list to really spotlight the country's small but up-and-coming practices @UR?

It's a balancing act to manage size and creative output in one list but many of our entrants already fall under the 20 employees or less category (or indeed the one employee category!) Practices such as DO, Sonia Browse and New Practice have done very well this year - it's not simply a function of size.

The strength of the ranking has always been in showing the relative changes year to year rather than absolute headline positioning. I think that's something we can surface more to show who is punching above their weight.

A sub-listing for different weight classes is definitely something we can look at as well as more visual means of highlighting who has done the most with the least.
