Possilpoint Community Centre sees the light
January 7 2025
A rundown community centre in Possilpark is set for a major revamp, transforming a cold and utilitarian concrete bunker into a beacon for the area.
Collective Architecture, on behalf of Hub West Scotland and Possilpoint Trust, propose a full overhaul of the Possilpoint Community Centre to improve its accessibility and appearance for a minimal capital cost.
Working with the existing structure refurbishment works will deliver a covered main entrance to improve circulation, refurbished activity halls and modernised services. Interventions centre around introducing daylight to the deep plan by stripping back underutilised structural openings while retaining the existing layout and footprint.
In a planning statement, Collective wrote: "The large, underutilised structural openings present an excellent opportunity to introduce more natural light into the building with minimal intervention. This enhancement not only revitalises the interior but also improves energy efficiency and user experience.
"The redesigned façade establishes a welcoming connection with the community, creating a visually striking and accessible entrance. Acting as a focal point, the new frontage draws visitors in while balancing aesthetics and functionality, ensuring the building is approachable and inclusive."
The central hall is to become the heart of the new look hub with a raised ceiling incorporating a large rooflight, introducing daylight to the space for the first time. New elements contrast with the concrete blockwork of old, using a mix of brick, aluminium cladding, mesh, and render.
