Worcester 'hockey stick' bridge goes with the flow
December 6 2024
A one-of-a-kind pedestrian footbridge linking Worcester city centre to outlying suburbia has been unveiled by the prolific bridge-building practice, Moxon, fresh from their success in a National Highways footbridge competition.
Working in tandem with Jacobs the team has spanned the River Severn with a sinuous pedestrian and cycle route that treads lightly on the riverbed thanks to its slender profile and dark/green colour scheme.
The Kepax Bridge is defined by its eye-catching 90-degree curve which sweeps people up and around Gheluvelt Park before skirting a wooded river bank and descending to an open field. The unique 'hockey stick' design was dictated by the need to avoid obstructing existing paths and parkland, offering a flood-proof navigation in an area prone to inundation.
Moxon director Ezra Groskin said: “Kepax Bridge is an important, climate-change resilient addition to Worcester’s civic infrastructure, forming a much-needed crossing over the River Severn. It connects residents in the city’s north-western suburbs to jobs in the centre and leisure amenities in the adjacent Gheluvelt Park and beyond. While we hope the new bridge will become a landmark that local people are proud of, combining functionality with delight has been our primary concern throughout the project.”
Defined by a 29m A-frame pylon the 145-long steel crossing has a generous 4m girth, lined by a parapet of inward leaning stainless steel rods that support a handrail and bike rail.

Not sure we can afford engineering ego trips with one eye on the awards circuit at this time.
Second cousin to the infamous £100mill bat shed.
No wonder Starmer is getting mildly annoyed.
