Edinburgh Dry Dock opens up as a shipping container commercial hub

Forth Ports has held a follow-up consultation for the mixed-use development at a former dry dock at Port of Leith.

Harbour31 would see a variety of industrial, education and leisure uses introduced to the former docks in a series of shipping container buildings, supporting a broader revitalisation of Edinburgh's waterfront that includes up to 800 homes.

Surplus land around Edinburgh dry Dock off Loverose Way has been released by the port operator for alternative use, framed by industrial-style containers referencing the area's maritime heritage.

In a consultation statement, Forth Ports wrote: "The proposed development is primarily for business use, forming part of the mix of uses within Leith. It will provide new flexible business spaces to meet identified demand, supporting the local economy. The development will also open up land that is currently inaccessible to the public.

"Open space, along with food and beverage and retail facilities, will be accessible to the public. The new public realm will allow access to heritage assets such as the dock and pump house for the first time."

A planning application by gfivethree is expected before the end of the year.

Four stories? Find it bizarre that this isn't higher density along the waterfront in Leith docks, ideal location for some elevation.

@town planner - I think 4 storeys is ideal, it would be sympathetic to the views all the way up to the centre of Edinburgh. let’s not turn Leith into Woolwich. Edinburgh is more tasteful than that

My heart sank when I first read that CDA were designing this.
