Charity expansion to close Dundee's family care gap
November 5 2024
A Dundee charity dedicated to supporting children and young people with disabilities and additional needs is expanding to improve family support services.
Following an asset transfer from Dundee City Council £1.6m has been allocated for the refurbishment of The Dundee Yard at Drumlanrig Place, a supported play space offering advice and services for parents and carers.
Service development manager Gill Thomson said, “We know, through our important work with Dundee City Council, that there is a significant gap in services for families with children with additional support needs, particularly on our doorstep in Douglas, Mid Craigie and Linlathen.
“As well as extending our reach, the renovation will create a more welcoming and fit-for-purpose facility, a one-stop shop for whole-family support that will serve our city for many years to come.”
The current facility has a capacity for around 337 children but is constrained by its poor condition and layout. To rectify this a replacement roof has been specified along with a reconfigured interior to create a changing places room, sensory area, office and meeting spaces, a kitchen and dining space.
Backed by the Scottish Government, The Robertson Trust, The Gannochy Trust and The Northwood Charitable Trust the design is led by James F Stephen Architects and Hardies.
The refurbishment will commence later this month for completion by summer 2025.
