Crop Innovation Centre to safeguard yields against environmental upheaval

An innovative research centre dedicated to crop production has opened its doors at the James Hutton Institute in Invergowrie.

The Crop Innovation Centre will improve food security by taking research from the lab to the field to improve farming practices against the threat posed by climate change and environmental degradation.

This includes deploying sensors and drones to improve barley yields and new breeding programmes to improve resilience.

The 8,000 sqm climate-controlled facility has been designed by Oberlanders Architects and includes a vertical growth tower and storage, built for £27.8m.

A dedicated phenotyping centre for the genetic sequencing of different crops is due to open in the spring with the promise of refining the taste, nutrition and aroma of the staple crop.

Good to see it finished, it seemed to be under construction for a long time. Would be interested to see what the vertical growth tower consists of?

Architecturally not bad and another important building block for the matrix.

Why grow your plants using the beautiful mother nature when you can have a fully controlled and energised metal and plastic environment like this?

Of course the argument will be that we need to destroy mother nature ever faster to guard against her destruction....
